just done a scan on the car and tried googling the fault code but nothing seems to come up

This failure code 1117 is in VW central Electronic as the following known:
1117 - engine load signal from the Generator DF
Please check if the failure also is in the ECM, if there is another failure say´s like the engine load signal, it likes to be from the Generator controller.
