Neutral Sensor Low Reference

Circuit/System Description
The neutral position sensor is a three wire sensor, connected to a 5 V reference circuit, a low reference circuit, and a signal circuit. The engine control module (ECM) supplies 5 V to the neutral position sensor, and also provides a sensor ground path on the low reference circuit. The neutral position sensor sends a voltage signal to the ECM on the signal circuit. The voltage on the signal circuit will vary from a voltage less than or equal to 5 V when the transmission is in the neutral position, to a voltage less than or equal to 1.5 V when the transmission is in gear.

Conditions for Running the DTC
• DTC P0641 is not set.
• The system voltage is more than 9 V.
• The ignition is in the RUN position.
Conditions for Setting the DTC
P086B

The neutral position sensor is stuck in range.

P086C

The neutral position sensor voltage is less than 0.1 V for more than 1 s.

P086D

The neutral position sensor voltage is more than 5.2 V for more than 1 s.

Action Taken When the DTC Sets
DTC P086B - P086D are Type A DTCs.

Conditions for Clearing the DTC
DTC P086B - P086D are Type A DTCs.

Circuit/System Verification
1. If DTC P0641 is set, refer to Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) List - Vehicle .
2. Ignition ON, observe the ECM scan tool Neutral Position Sensor parameter. Verify the gear shift lever position matches the scan tool parameter.
3. Perform the neutral position sensor learn procedure. Refer to Neutral Position Sensor Learn .
4. Operate the vehicle within the conditions for running the DTC to verify the DTC does not reset.
Circuit/System Testing
1. Ignition OFF, disconnect the harness connector of the B209 Neutral Position Sensor.
2. Ignition OFF, test for less than 1 Ω between the low reference circuit terminal 2 and ground.
⇒ If greater than the specified value, test the low reference circuit for an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
3. Ignition ON, test for 4.8-5.2 V between the 5 V reference circuit terminal 1 and ground.
⇒ If less than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
⇒ If greater than the specified range, test the 5 V reference circuit for a short to voltage. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
4. Ignition ON, observe the scan tool Neutral Position Sensor parameter is In Gear.
⇒ If not the specified value, test the signal circuit terminal 3 for a short to voltage. If the circuit test normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
5. Install a 3 A fused jumper wire between the signal circuit terminal 3 and the 5 V reference circuit terminal 1. Verify that the scan tool Neutral Position Sensor parameter is Neutral.
⇒ If not the specified value, test the signal circuit for or a short to ground or an open/high resistance. If the circuit tests normal, replace the K20 Engine Control Module.
6. If all circuits test normal, replace the B209 Neutral Position Sensor.
